93-year-old treated to afternoon tea at Coombe Abbey with four generations

Red Letter Days’ #NoMoreSlippers campaign gives older people the opportunity to have the experiences they’ve always dreamed of.

93-year-old super-Gran Joan Turner, from Tamworth in Staffordshire, was treated to a special afternoon tea with every generation of her enormous family this week, in recognition of a lifetime spent selflessly caring for others through difficult times.

Joan, who has 12 children, 36 grandchildren and 73 great-grandchildren, visited Coombe Abbey Hotel in Coventry on Monday afternoon for a special afternoon tea attended by 9 members of her family spanning four generations.

The youngest of the group was Lucas, who is just 5 months old. 

Joan was gifted the treat by experience gift company Red Letter Days as part of their #NoMoreSlippers campaign, which gives older people the opportunity to have the experiences they’ve always dreamed of.

Joan was nominated by her granddaughter Pam, who wanted to show her gratitude for her grandmother’s boundless love and support over the years, despite close personal losses. Joan lost her husband last year after 75 years of marriage and has also suffered the loss of one of her daughters. 

On Monday, 9 December Joan and her family (two of her children, four of her grandchildren, and three of her great-grandchildren) enjoyed an afternoon tea complete with warm mince pies, freshly-baked scones with clotted cream, and fizz to toast the occasion.

Pam said, “Nobody deserves a treat like this more than my Nan. She has been through so much in the last few years so we really wanted to get everyone together before Christmas to remind her how much she is loved and appreciated, and to create some happy memories.

“She’s so intelligent and independent and we all love her so much. A big thank you to Red Letter Days for making this happen for her.”

Joan said, “Coombe Abbey Hotel is absolutely beautiful, a wonderful place to have a lovely afternoon tea with special family, something I will treasure always.”

Ageism is a rising issue in the UK, despite the fact that adults over the age of 65 contribute £152 billion to the UK economy each year through employment, caregiving and volunteering, according to Age UK.

Red Letter Days’ #NoMoreSlippers campaign, backed by Action for Elders and Age Space, is challenging preconceptions about what older people are capable of and reminding everyone to ask and listen to loved ones’ Christmas wishes, rather than making assumptions.
