‘Footgolf’ to open at the War Memorial Park this week

As it sounds, it’s a combination of football and golf, just with bigger holes – and it provides the first such facility in Coventry.

An exciting new sports facility has arrived in the city’s War Memorial Park, known as Footgolf, which will open as part of our European City of Sport year celebrations.

Opening to the public on Saturday 8 June, as it sounds, it’s a combination of football and golf, just with bigger holes.

There’s no better time for the launch of this new attraction with Coventry celebrating the European City of Sport year and Year of Wellbeing, as the sport will offer people an enjoyable and easy way to get out and enjoy some exercise with family and friends.

The course is situated on the old ‘pitch and putt’ site, in the South of the park behind the Visitors Centre, and will provide a new ideal venue to celebrate family events, birthdays, work outings and children’s birthday parties.

Councillor Abdul Salam Khan, Cabinet Member for Parks said: “We’re looking at Footgolf attracting additional numbers and footfall into the park with it being the only such facility in Coventry. As a Council, we’ve had to take a look at the current usage of all our facilities and the bottom line is that use of the current pitch and putt course in the park has been steadily declining.

On that basis, we need to look to generate more income to make the facility more financially viable.  We want to encourage people to come along, have a game, enjoy some exercise whilst having fun and make the most of all the facilities the park has to offer.”

Local football, golf or sporting clubs are also being encouraged to make use of the new facility and make it a regular fixture in their social calendar.

As you would expect, all the equipment is provided on site and all skill levels are welcome. There’s no need to book either, you can just turn up and play the nine or eighteen holes course.

A game on the eighteen-hole course will cost £6.50 per adult or £3.25 for concessions and under 16s. For the nine-hole course, the adult price is reduced to £4.50.
