New trains & clearer fares coming to Coventry train routes

The changes are promised by FirstGroup and Trenitalia, who will run services on the West Coast mainline from December.

From December, FirstGroup and Trenitalia will run services on the West Coast mainline, including routes through Coventry, most notably the Coventry to Birmingham New Street line currently ran by Virgin Rail.

FirstGroup has laid out its vision to improve the line with new more efficient, lower-emission trains, clearer fares and more services.

In an effort to increase capacity and improve journeys, they will replace outdated diesel Voyager trains with 23 new, more comfortable trains.

The existing fleet will also see a refurbishment with 25,000 new more comfortable seats being installed.

Trains on the line will now also benefit from more reliable free Wi-Fi for all customers, at-seat wireless charging for electronics and new onboard food offerings.

As well as introducing new and better trains, stations across the existing network will be upgraded and several locations will benefit from better facilities including more car parking and greater accessibility.

They’ve also promised to improve access to real-time journey information, so passengers can be confident they’re up to date with their journey’s progress.

Simpler, more flexible fares and smart ticketing will be introduced to allow customers to exchange or amend tickets bought from one channel on any other.

FirstGroup has also committed to repaying customers a proportion of the cost of their ticket when they encounter delays of fifteen minutes instead of thirty minutes for today’s passengers.

By 2022, the consortium aims to offer a further 260 extra services each week, increasing seat miles by more than 10% compared with 2017/18.

New sustainability goals will see the fleet cut its carbon emissions by more than 60%, increase waste recycling to 80% and include free water refills onboard.
